Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) surprised the cricketing world when they released Shreyas Iyer, their championship-winning captain, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Under Iyer’s leadership, KKR clinched the IPL 2024 title, making their decision to part ways with him even more shocking. The reasons behind this move were unclear for months, but recent revelations shed light on the situation.
Shreyas Iyer, now with Punjab Kings after being bought for a
record-breaking ₹26.75 crore in the mega auction, admitted that he was
surprised and disappointed by KKR’s decision. Speaking to Inside Sports, Iyer
revealed that the franchise did not engage with him about his retention even as
the deadline approached.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with KKR, especially winning
the championship. The fan support was phenomenal, and my relationship with
co-owner Shah Rukh Khan was excellent,” Iyer shared. “However, the lack of
communication was troubling. After we won the title, there was some initial
discussion, but then all talks stopped. No solid effort was made to discuss my
retention.”
Reports suggest that KKR did not initiate conversations with
Iyer even with just a week left before the retention deadline. This lack of
communication ultimately led to the captain’s release. “I was shocked and
confused about what was happening. Due to the breakdown in communication, we
ended up mutually parting ways. That’s the long and short of it,” Iyer stated.
Despite the abrupt ending, Iyer expressed gratitude for his
time with KKR, highlighting the memorable moments he shared with the team and
its fans. Meanwhile, his new journey with Punjab Kings promises fresh
challenges as he looks to lead another franchise to glory.
